10 Strong Wordle Starting Words and How to Choose One

Compare balanced and vowel-heavy Wordle openers, understand what each tests, and choose a first guess that fits your playing style.

There is no universally best opener under every scoring method. An entropy solver, a letter-frequency table, and a player trying to win in Hard Mode can prefer different words. A useful first guess usually tests five distinct letters, combines common consonants with one or two vowels, and avoids committing too early to one word family.

Balanced openers

  • SLATE tests S, L, and T alongside A and E.
  • CRANE covers C, R, and N with A and E.
  • TRACE rearranges a similar high-frequency set and tests C in the final position.
  • STARE combines three common consonants with A and E.
  • LEAST uses the same five letters as SLATE but checks different positions.
  • CRATE exchanges N for T while preserving A, C, E, and R.

These are sensible choices because they cover distinct, common letters. Their order here is not a claim that one is mathematically guaranteed to outperform the others.

Vowel-heavy openers

  • AUDIO tests four main vowels but only one consonant.
  • ADIEU also tests four vowels and one consonant.
  • RAISE offers three vowels plus R and S.
  • AROSE combines three vowels with R and S in different positions.

Vowel-heavy guesses reveal the vowel frame quickly. The tradeoff is weaker consonant coverage, so the second guess often needs several new consonants.

A repeatable approach

Pick one balanced opener and use it consistently for a while. Consistency makes it easier to learn what common green and yellow patterns imply. After the result, choose a second word that respects confirmed clues and tests useful new letters. In Normal Mode, a diagnostic second guess can be valuable; in Hard Mode, every revealed clue must be used.

The site's solver now partitions the candidate list by the exact green, yellow, and gray pattern each guess would create. It ranks guesses by entropy, expected candidates remaining, and the largest possible remaining group. Duplicate letters are handled with the same two-pass accounting used to score real feedback.

How to read the ranking below

Entropy is measured in bits. A higher value means that, on average, the guess separates the answer list into more useful groups. Expected remaining estimates the average number of answers left after all possible feedback patterns are weighted by how often they occur. Worst case measures the largest group that any one feedback result can leave.

Those columns answer different questions. A guess with the highest entropy may not have the smallest worst case. A valid answer can win immediately, while an accepted non-answer can only gather information. For ordinary play, a high-ranking possible answer is often the easiest practical compromise.

Normal Mode and Hard Mode

In Normal Mode, an information-first opener can be followed by a second guess that tests several new letters. In Hard Mode, every confirmed green and yellow clue must be used, so the safest opener is often one whose common feedback patterns still permit flexible follow-ups. The ranking is therefore evidence, not a command: mode and personal goals still matter.

Limits of any “best word” claim

Results change when the answer list, accepted-guess list, or objective changes. This analysis uses the site's fixed 2,309-answer model and a high-coverage shortlist from its accepted guesses. It does not claim to reproduce a private current New York Times answer list, and it does not promise the fewest guesses for every individual puzzle.
